PPSC Senior Assistant typing test pattern — speed, accuracy and format
The Punjab Public Service Commission sets one standard across both papers: a minimum gross speed of 30 words per minute with no more than 8% errors, which is the 92% accuracy figure candidates usually quote. Each paper runs 10 minutes on a computer at the centre, Punjabi and English, with a short gap between the two. General candidates sit both; ex-servicemen appear for the English paper only. Crucially the test is qualifying — clearing it keeps you in the process, but the marks do not join your merit position, which is decided by the written examination.
Learn typing for PPSC Senior Assistant — Punjabi and English
Because both papers count, the two languages need separate muscle memory and most candidates underestimate the Punjabi side. English is ordinary QWERTY touch typing: hands on A S D F and J K L ;, index fingers on the F and J bumps, eyes off the keyboard. Punjabi runs on the Gurmukhi INSCRIPT layout with the Raavi font, where matras and conjuncts — not raw letter speed — are what cost people the accuracy gate. Work through the Punjabi typing course and the English typing course in parallel rather than finishing one and cramming the other the week before.
Practise the typing test format — timed, chunked, live Net WPM
The passage comes in chunks of about 32 to 34 words on a 10-minute clock, with Net WPM and accuracy updating live, so you see the 92% line the moment you cross it rather than at the end of an attempt. At least 80% of a chunk has to be typed before Enter advances you, and every chunk must be finished for the attempt to score — which makes pacing part of the skill, not just finger speed. Practising in that exact shape is what stops the format itself from being a surprise on exam day.
PPSC vs PSSSB Senior Assistant — what is the same and what differs
The typing bar is identical: 30 WPM at 92% accuracy in Punjabi and English, so practice transfers completely between the two. Everything around it differs. PPSC is the Punjab Public Service Commission, a constitutional body at Baradari Garden, Patiala, recruiting through its own notifications; PSSSB is the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board, which runs the subordinate-services posts. Separate advertisements, separate syllabi, separate application cycles — you apply to each on its own terms. Home row — rest position
Place both hands on A S D F (left) and J K L ; (right). F and J have raised bumps — find them without looking. Return fingers to home row after every keystroke.

Eyes on screen — always
Never look at the keyboard. Touch typing means your fingers know where every key is from muscle memory. This is the only way to consistently reach 30 WPM in 10 minutes.

Chunk system — 10 paragraphs
The passage is divided into 10 chunks of ~32–34 words each. You must type at least 80% of the current chunk before pressing Enter to move to the next. Complete all 10 chunks to be eligible.

Backspace is allowed
Backspace is free during the attempt. Once every chunk is done, spend whatever time is left correcting errors and pushing accuracy clear of the 92% line.

92% accuracy — hard requirement
You must maintain at least 92% accuracy. If accuracy drops below 92%, you fail the test regardless of how fast you typed. Accuracy matters more than raw speed.

Everything below is taken from the PPSC Annexure-A typing instructions (Annexure-A, PPSC Patiala, Advt 11/2018, issued by the Secretary, 28/01/2019). A word counts as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Both gates must clear together: 30 WPM gross and a maximum of 8% mistakes, which is 92% accuracy.
How mistakes are counted
A full mistake is an omitted word, a wrong word substituted, or an extra word added. A half mistake is a spacing error — a missing or an extra space between words. For a mis-typed word, any characters beyond the length of the reference word are ignored when gross speed is computed.

Error characters = mistakes × 5 Net characters = Gross characters − Error characters Gross speed = Gross characters ÷ (5 × minutes) → truncated to a whole number Accuracy = 100 × Net ÷ Gross → must be ≥ 92%
The truncation is not a rounding: 298 characters in 10 minutes is 29 WPM, not 29.8, and 29 fails. Counted as characters: spaces, numbers, letters, punctuation and Enter. Not counted: extra spaces, extra Enters, Shift, Alt and Backspace.

One extra word is enough to fail a candidate whose speed was fine. That is the whole argument for training first-pass accuracy rather than raw speed.
The chunk system, and moving between chunks
The passage is shown in chunks of three lines — roughly 32 to 34 words each, ten chunks in total. All ten must be typed to be eligible to clear the test. Once 80% of the current chunk is typed, Enter or the down arrow advances you, and skipped words carry a penalty. The up arrow returns to the previous line, and Page Up and Page Down move between chunks. Candidates who finish all ten chunks may spend the remaining time correcting mistakes and lifting accuracy.
On the day
Each language test runs 10 minutes, with a five-minute intervalbetween the Punjabi and English tests. Some keyboard keys are non-functional during the test. The software evaluates instantly and displays every typing error at the end. A mock test appears on the Commission website roughly ten days before the typing test — take it, because it is the same interface.
Punjabi vowels — type each as a single character

The PPSC Annexure-A typing instructions require each vowel to be typed as one character. Building a vowel from a carrier plus a matra is not acceptable — typing ਆ as ਅ followed by ਾ is marked wrong.

Lagamatras and half characters must sit in the correct position. Omitting one, or adding one that does not belong, makes the whole word wrong — not a partial deduction. For counting, vowels, consonants, matras, addak, bindi, tippi and half characters each count as one character.
