Shorthand Dictation and Transcription — What Makes Steno Typist Different

Steno Typist is the one PSSSB post in this group whose skill test is not just a typing test. A passage is dictated aloud at a set speed, you record it in shorthand, and you then transcribe your notes on a computer within a fixed window. The typing test covered further down this page is a separate stage — clearing it is not enough on its own.

This changes how you prepare. Typing speed alone will not carry you: the bottleneck is usually shorthand note-taking accuracy under dictation pressure, and the ability to read your own outlines back cleanly afterwards. Candidates who prepare only on typing drills tend to find that transcription, not typing, is where the time goes.
