F and J have bump markers — rest position

UPSSSC English Typing Rules 2026

🏠

Home row — starting position

Place both hands on home row — Left: A S D F · Right: J K L ;. F and J have a raised bump so you can feel the position without looking down.
👆

Touch typing — never look at keyboard

Keep your eyes on the screen at all times. After each keystroke, return your finger to home row. This is touch typing — the only way to reach 30 WPM consistently.

Backspace is limited in UPSSSC

Backspace works only within the current word and one previous word. You cannot go back further. Type accurately from the start — errors cannot be fixed freely.
📊

5 errors free — then penalty

First 5 errors are free — no score deduction. From the 6th error onward, each error deducts 5 words from your net score. Accuracy matters as much as speed.

5 minutes — shorter than SSC CHSL

UPSSSC gives only 5 minutes per language, not 10 like SSC CHSL. A single slow passage significantly impacts your final WPM. Practice in 5-minute timed sessions only.

WPM Calculation — Full & Half Mistakes Explained

Full Mistake — 1 error each
Spelling error (omission, addition, substitution of letters)
Wrong word typed or word omitted
Word repeated (e.g. "shall shall")
Incomplete / half-typed word
Half Mistake — 0.5 error each
½Spacing error (no space or extra space between words)
½Wrong capitalisation (Capital for small or vice versa)
½Punctuation error (missing or wrong punctuation)
½Transposition error (words in wrong order)
½Paragraphic error (wrong paragraph spacing)
Formula
Total errors = Full mistakes + (Half mistakes ÷ 2)
If total errors ≤ 5 → no penalty
If total errors > 5 → penalty = (total errors − 5) × 5 words
Net WPM = (Total keystrokes ÷ 5 − penalty) ÷ 5 minutes
