Every rule and figure below follows the official RSSB directions for the Phase-II Hindi and English Typing Speed and Efficiency Test
Rajasthan Staff Selection Board, Jaipur · Clerk Grade-II / Junior Assistant Combined Direct Recruitment Examination 2024 · issued 12 December 2024 · Last updated 2026-07-31
The RSSB typing test — conducted by the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB), renamed from the Rajasthan Subordinate and Ministerial Services Selection Board (RSMSSB) in 2023 — is the same exam candidates still search for as the RSMSSB typing test. Both names refer to one board and one set of rules: DevLys 010 Hindi on the Remington GAIL layout, four papers of 25 marks each, word-lock on Enter or Space, and marks that count towards the merit list.

DevLys 010 Remington GAIL keyboard layout
This is the layout RSSB mandates for the Hindi papers. Hover any key to see the character it produces and which finger reaches it. Note how little it has in common with INSCRIPT — d is क, k is the ा matra, and f is ि, which is typed before its consonant.

Why other DevLys charts disagree — and how this one is checked
The official directions print a Hindi keyboard image and then warn directly beneath it that the keyboard shown is illustrative only, that candidates should verify it against the DevLys 010 font, and that some keys may differ from the illustration. That warning is why the charts circulating online contradict each other — many were traced from that illustration rather than from the font.
The layout above comes from the same verified map our lessons and scoring use, cross-checked against the IndiaTyping GAIL chart, two independent Remington GAIL implementations, and classic Kruti Dev sequences. RSSB's own two worked examples confirm it: केवल = dsoy and प = i — which is exactly what this keyboard produces.
RSSB LDC typing test rules you must know
01
Cut-Copy-Paste, right click, Select All
How RSSB typing marks are awarded
RSSB sets no words-per-minute threshold. Marks are awarded per correct word, and those marks go into the merit list rather than acting only as a pass or fail gate. That changes the strategy completely: clearing the minimum keeps you in, but every mark above it improves your rank.
Hindi speed test
Passage length400 words
Marks per correct word0.0625
Maximum marks25 / 25
Words needed for 9 marks144 words
That is roughly14.4 WPM
Full marks means40 WPM
English speed test
Passage length500 words
Marks per correct word0.05
Maximum marks25 / 25
Words needed for 9 marks180 words
That is roughly18 WPM
Full marks means50 WPM
The four papers
Hindi typing speed · English typing speed · Hindi efficiency · English efficiency 25 marks each, 10 minutes each — 100 marks in total Minimum 9 out of 25 in every paper, applied independently SC and ST candidates receive a relaxation of up to 5% in the minimum marks
What loses you marks in the speed test
A word earns its marks only if it matches the passage exactly. The official directions list the following as earning no marks:
गलत वर्ण, शब्द या अंक
Typing a wrong character, word or digit
वर्ण, शब्द या अंक छूटना
Omitting a character, word or digit
पुनरावृत्ति
Repeating a character, word, digit or whole line
विराम चिह्न
Not reproducing punctuation exactly as given
शब्द-अंतराल
Word-spacing errors between words
Capital और small letters
Not reproducing English capitalisation exactly
हिन्दी मात्राएँ
Not reproducing Hindi matras exactly
अदृश्य मात्रा पुनरावृत्ति
Duplicate matras you cannot see but the computer detects
The two examples RSSB gives
केवल = dsoy is correct · dsssssoy is not प = i is correct · Ik is not
Both look identical on screen. The second version of each carries redundant keystrokes the software counts as wrong, which is why building characters by improvising key combinations quietly costs marks.
The Efficiency Test — half the marks, and the half most candidates ignore
Fifty of the hundred marks on offer have nothing to do with typing speed. The Hindi and English efficiency tests run in MS Word 2013 and MS Excel 2013, and test practical formatting against a paragraph and a table that are already loaded on screen. Each carries 25 marks over 10 minutes, with the same minimum of nine, and you get 15 separate questions for each language on a printed paper handed out at the exam.
This is where preparation most often goes wrong. Candidates spend eight weeks building speed, walk in having never formatted a table under time pressure, and lose marks that were far easier to earn than the ones they chased for months. Because RSSB counts typing marks toward merit, those are not abstract losses.
What you can use
Cut, copy and paste
Right mouse click and Select All
All function keys
CTRL+Z to undo your own mistakes
Back-Space freely — unlike the speed test
The mouse, as needed
What earns nothing
Any formatting or editing beyond what the question asks
Correct work done on a paragraph or table you have altered or deleted beyond the task
The paragraph and table are pre-loaded by default. Change them beyond what was asked and the marks for correct work on that item are forfeited too. Do exactly what is asked, nothing more.
Topics named in the directions: paragraph formatting, paging, header, footer, font, background, table border, spacing and word replace — with the typed content and formatting both to be demonstrated. At the end you sign the certificate printed at the foot of the question paper and hand it back to the invigilator.

Learn DevLys 010 Remington GAIL typing for RSSB — from home row to exam pace
The first decision matters more than anything that follows: install DevLys 010 and learn the Remington GAIL layout. Time spent on Mangal INSCRIPT does not transfer, and candidates who discover this late lose weeks. If you already type in Kruti Dev 010 you have effectively learned it already, because the key mappings are the same. If you have learned INSCRIPT, expect the first fortnight to feel worse than starting from nothing, because existing muscle memory actively fights the new positions.
Start on the home row with both hands anchored and eyes on the screen rather than the keys, and add one row at a time only once the previous one is automatic. The concept that takes longest to settle is matra ordering — in DevLys the short इ matra is typed before its consonant and repositions itself on screen, which feels backwards until it doesn't. Drill words containing it deliberately rather than hoping it becomes natural.
Once the keys are covered, shift to timed ten-minute passages, and practise with word-lock switched on. This is the detail most practice tools get wrong: rehearsing with free correction builds precisely the habit the exam punishes, because a word committed with Enter or Space cannot be fixed. Aim past the qualifying floor — 144 correct words in Hindi and 180 in English clears nine marks, but the passage runs to 400 and 500 words respectively, and every word beyond the minimum is merit. Candidates starting from scratch generally need six to eight weeks of daily 30 to 40 minute practice. Use the Hindi typing lessons for key coverage and the exam-style test for pacing, and reserve separate time for the efficiency test.
Best typing software for RSSB LDC — what to look for
Four things any RSSB practice tool has to get right.
Most typing sites use INSCRIPT, score in words per minute, allow free correction and ignore formatting entirely. Every one of those trains a habit RSSB does not reward.
Remington GAIL, not INSCRIPT
The layout has to match the exam. Practising INSCRIPT for a DevLys 010 test means learning the wrong key positions from day one.
Marks per word, not just WPM
RSSB scores 0.0625 per word in Hindi and 0.05 in English out of 25. A WPM readout tells you nothing about where you stand against the 9-mark floor.
Word-lock on Enter and Space
A word is final the moment you advance. Practising with free correction builds the exact habit the exam penalises.
Weak key detection
Every session records which keys cost you marks and builds targeted drills from your own error pattern.

RSSB LDC Hindi typing test — frequently asked questions
Yes — same board, same exam. The Rajasthan Subordinate and Ministerial Services Selection Board (RSMSSB) was renamed the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB) in 2023. The DevLys 010 font, the word-lock behaviour, the four-paper structure and the marks-per-word scoring are all unchanged by the rename. Official notifications and candidate discussion still use both names, so an RSSB LDC typing test and an RSMSSB LDC typing test refer to the same thing.
RSSB does not set a words-per-minute threshold. Scoring is per correct word: 0.0625 marks in Hindi and 0.05 marks in English, out of 25 marks per paper. Working backwards from the 9-mark minimum, Hindi needs 144 correct words in 10 minutes, which is 14.4 WPM, and English needs 180 correct words, which is 18 WPM. Full marks means typing the entire passage correctly — 400 words in Hindi (40 WPM) and 500 words in English (50 WPM). Because marks feed the merit list, most competitive candidates aim well above the qualifying floor.
Each correct word earns marks directly: 0.0625 per word in Hindi against a 400-word passage, and 0.05 per word in English against a 500-word passage. Both work out to a maximum of 25 marks. No marks are given for a word containing a wrong character, word or digit, an omitted character or word, a repeated character, word, digit or line, punctuation not reproduced exactly, a word-spacing error, incorrect use of capital and small letters in English, or incorrect matras in Hindi.
If you type a word incorrectly you may correct it with Back-Space, but only until you press Enter or the Space-Bar to move to the next word. Once Enter or Space-Bar has been used, Back-Space will not work on that word and the mistake is permanent. This is the single most consequential rule in the exam, because it makes first-pass accuracy worth far more than raw speed. In the efficiency test, by contrast, Back-Space can be used freely.
The DevLys 010 font on a standard keyboard, using the Remington GAIL layout. DevLys 010 shares its key mapping with Kruti Dev 010, so anyone who already types in Kruti Dev can begin practising immediately. English typing uses the commonly used font on a standard QWERTY keyboard. The software pre-selects the notified font and font changes are not permitted during the speed test.
The board itself says not entirely. The note printed directly beneath the Hindi keyboard image in the official directions states that the keyboard shown is illustrative only, that candidates should verify it against the DevLys 010 font, and that some keys may differ from the illustration. The authoritative reference is the DevLys 010 font itself, not any printed chart — which is why practising against the actual font matters more than memorising a diagram.
Four, all compulsory: Hindi typing speed, English typing speed, Hindi efficiency and English efficiency. Each carries 25 marks and runs for 10 minutes, making 100 marks in total. A candidate must attempt all four and obtain the minimum qualifying marks in both languages, otherwise they are declared unsuccessful.
Nine marks out of 25 in each of the four papers, applied independently. Candidates from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories receive a relaxation of up to 5 per cent in the minimum marks for each paper of each phase.
It is conducted in MS Word 2013 and MS Excel 2013 in both languages, and tests practical formatting rather than typing speed. Questions cover paragraph formatting, paging, header, footer, font, background, table border, spacing and word replace, among others. There are 15 separate questions for each language, supplied on a printed question paper at the exam. Cut-copy-paste, right mouse click, Select All and all function keys are available, and CTRL+Z can be used to undo mistakes.
You do not lose marks, but you gain nothing either — no marks are awarded for any formatting or editing beyond what the question actually asks for. More seriously, the paragraph and table are pre-loaded on screen by default, and if that pre-loaded material is altered or deleted beyond the task set, no marks are awarded for any correct work done on that changed paragraph or table. Do exactly what is asked and nothing more.
Yes, and this is what separates RSSB from most other state typing tests. The typing marks are added to the merit calculation rather than acting only as a pass or fail gate. Clearing nine marks keeps you in the process, but every mark above it improves your rank — so there is a genuine return on practising past the qualifying line, particularly across a large vacancy count.
No. Once the test begins it runs for the full allotted time and stops only when the time expires. The official directions advise candidates to use the whole period to type the given paper as completely and correctly as possible rather than losing time. Practically this means any spare minutes are best spent checking and improving what you have already typed.
Candidates may not bring their own keyboard or any kind of keyboard sticker. Electronic devices and mobile phones are prohibited. No other software may be opened before or during the exam, no shortcut keys may be used, and the Alt and Control keys are not to be used during the exam — the one exception being CTRL+Z in the efficiency test. A mouse may be used as needed in both the speed and efficiency tests. Entry to the centre closes one hour before the test begins.
Yes. After logging in at your seat you get a practice test to check that the keyboard, mouse and screen are working correctly, and the board also publishes a separate mock test link on its website beforehand which candidates are advised to try. If a hardware or software problem is not reported to the invigilator before the exam begins, responsibility rests with the candidate.
Candidates starting from scratch typically need six to eight weeks of daily 30 to 40 minute practice to reach a comfortable working pace. Remington GAIL usually takes longer to learn than INSCRIPT because the layout follows mechanical typewriter conventions rather than phonetic logic. Anyone already fluent in Kruti Dev 010 has effectively already learned it, since the key mappings are the same. Anyone coming from Mangal INSCRIPT should expect the existing muscle memory to work against them at first.
The useful test is whether it does four things. It must use Remington GAIL rather than INSCRIPT, or you are drilling the wrong key positions. It must enforce word-lock on Enter and Space, because practising with free correction builds precisely the habit the exam punishes. It should report marks per correct word rather than only words per minute, to match how RSSB actually scores. And it should cover MS Word formatting for the efficiency test, which is half the available marks. TypingSutra does all four and runs free in the browser.
It depends on the exam, because the scoring models differ far more than candidates expect. RSSB LDC is marks-per-word across four papers with word-lock on the Remington GAIL layout. PSSSB requires 30 WPM gross at 92% accuracy in a ten-chunk interface. SSC CHSL asks for 35 WPM. CPCT requires 95% accuracy. An app applying one generic model to all of them will tell you that you are ready when you are not. TypingSutra keeps distinct targets, layouts and interfaces for RSSB, PSSSB, SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, DSSSB, UPSSSC and CPCT.
